Teaching Supplies Catalog Two settlements became the first Acadian settlements in the United States, Breaux Bridge and nearby Parks have the honor of being the oldest Acadian communities in the nation. The word "cajun" comes from the word "Acadian." Click here for more about Acadian-Cajun History.

In 1771, Acadian pioneer Firmin Breaux purchased land in present-day city of Breaux Bridge. He bought the land from a New Orleans merchant who had received the land as a French land grant. By 1774, Breaux's branding iron was registered and by 1786 he was one of the largest property owners in the Bayou Teche country.

In 1799, Firmin Breaux built a footbridge across the Bayou Teche. A suspension footbridge, the first bridge was likely made of rope and small planks. It was stabilized by being tied to small pilings located at each end of the bridge, as well as to a pair of huge live oak trees on both sides of the bayou. He built the footbridge across the Bayou Teche to visit his son, Joseph, who resided on the east bank. Firmin, of course, lived on the west bank, approximately where the St. Bernard School gym and playground are located today. When traveling directions were given, residents would often instruct people to "go to Breaux's bridge...", which eventually was adopted as the city's name. In 1817, the first vehicular bridge was built, allowing for wagons and increased commerce into the area.

The town received its official founding from Scholastique Picou Breaux, who was the wife of Agricole Breaux (son of Firmin Breaux). Although Firmin Breaux will always be considered the patriarch of Breaux Bridge, neither he nor his son, Agricole, ever had any intentions of building a town on their land. After Agricole's death in 1828, his wife, Scholastique, found herself in financial difficulties. On August 5, 1829, she had Plan de la Ville du Pont de Breaux drawn up and proceeded to sell lots. The plan featured streets, the bridge, general stores, a doctor's office, a school and land belonging to other citizens. A church parish was created in 1847 and in 1859, Breaux Bridge was officially incorporated.

The first street in Breaux Bridge was Poydras Street (its current name). The street was originally named Jefferson Street and consisted of present-day Poydras and Bridge Streets.

The first post office was established on March 8, 1837. And the first postmaster was Jean Jules Hardy.

The first map of Breaux Bridge was the United States Survey Map of 1816.

The first state representative from Breaux Bridge was David Rees, who served in the first Louisiana Legislature, in 1812.

The first known raised cottage plantation house was the home of Valery Martin, once located at Owl's Nest at Ruth Canal. It was built circa 1838 on the former homestead of his father, Claude Martin - the first settler in the area..

The first school in Breaux Bridge was recorded on Aug. 14, 1827, when Agricole Breaux presented a deed to the Administrator of Schools, covering a lot situated at the corner of present-day East Bridge and Rees Streets, to be used for a public school. The school's primary purpose was to educate children of the Breaux families. The teacher was a Mr. LeNoble. This school was only the second school recorded west of the Mississippi River, the first being the Academy of the Sacred Heart, founded in 1821 at Grand Coteau.

In 1959, the Louisiana legislature officially designated Breaux Bridge as "la capitale Mondiale de l'ecrevisse" ("the Crawfish Capital of the World").
